Surgical technicians provide a support system for surgeons. Surgeons depend upon these skilled professionals to assist them with equipment and surgical instruments. A surgeon must concentrate on the procedure; thus, a skilled surgical technician knows what instrument is needed during the surgery. A doctor may request a certain instrument and the technician must be able to supply that instrument quickly.

Surgical technicians work directly with the patients. Many times these healthcare professionals prepare patients for surgery. They clean and shave surgery incision sites. In addition, they bring the patient to the operating room. Surgical technicians have the responsibility of setting up the operating room. Before the surgery begins, the room must be well organized and sterilized. A patient can get infection when the room and equipment are not properly sterilized.
