Surgical tech schools in Colorado usually last 9 to 24 month. A high school diploma is usually a must. Training is usually received through formal programs offered through community colleges, vocational colleges, the military, and universities. There are more than 450 accredited training programs to become a surgical technician. During training you will experience both classroom education and hands on clinical experience. Technicians will learn drugs, equipment, and supplies, as well as sterile techniques and surgical procedures. To name a few, classes such as microbiology, Anatomy, and medical science will taken. Certified surgical technicians must earn 60 hours of continued education over a 4-year period or retake the certifying exam every 4 years.

About Surgical Technician Careers in Colorado

Surgical technicians are often called “scrubs” and. Under the supervision of a surgeon, surgical Technicians assist during surgical operations. Surgical technicians are usually members of operating room teams, which also consist of surgeons and nurses. Surgical technicians are usually responsible for preparing the operating the operating rooms and equipment. The technicians will also prep the patient for surgery by washing, shaving, and disinfecting incision sites. They then transport patients to the operating room. They will also check the patient’s vitals and charts ensuring the patients records are kept accurate.

During surgery, technicians will pass instruments to the surgeon. The technicians will hold the needles, supplies, and instruments. Once the specimen has been retrieved surgical technicians help prepare, care for, and dispose of specimens. Once the operation is complete they will ensure the patient is transferred back to the recovery room and will continue to track their records.

Surgical Technicians will work a typical 40-hour week, they also work nights, weekends, and holidays. Technicians must be able to stand for long hours and remain alert at all times. The work environment is fast paced and medical career is always advancing.
